Carol Frederick filled a major gap in law enforcement leadership growth and succession planning with her excellent book, Enroute. Enroute is more than the run-of-the-mill promotion preparation guide: Enroute seeks to inspire officers to promote by offering a matter-of-fact approach to why the officer should promote. Carol uses her best conversational and mentoring voice to the reader, making Enroute a true pager turner. If I were a chief or sheriff, I would give this book to officers and deputies on the first anniversary of their hire, and meet with them sometime after they have read it to get their thoughts. Enroute is what real leadership development planning looks like.

A comprehensive guide is provided to navigate the challenges as a leader with the author’s proven techniques provided to overcome obstacles providing actual, real-life scenarios and solutions. This book is the perfect guide for motivation in the workplace and what it takes to motivate successful outcomes from the workforce. This book is an excellent reference guide for existing supervisors who value positive outcomes in the workplace. It is also a must-read for any new law enforcement officer or agent who may be contemplating a promotion. What sets this book aside from others, is that the principles discussed are applicable to a variety of fields, positions and settings. For instance, leadership does not necessarily indicate “promotion”, it could refer to the management of a team or a task force. For this reason, Enroute! provides important insight into leading the mission. I highly recommend this book to law enforcement supervisors and anyone who may manage a project or a team.

As you continue to read it Carol makes you feel like you are literally supervising someone. Carol gives you many tools to gaining relationships, while inspiring others to be equipped to being better leaders. She is one of the best people I have learned from. Her teachings easily breaks down every leadership tool so you understand it. Get the book, you won’t let be able to put it down!!

This book is a very thoughtful presentation of leadership principles written for leaders at any level. It begins with a self evaluation about becoming a new leader and progresses through many aspects of being an effective leader. This book will be extremely helpful for new leaders but is also a good reminder for the seasoned leader to continually take stock of their leadership bona fides as new challenges arise. In law enforcement as in many professions, a leader is faced with ever changing rotations of personnel and personalities. Honing leadership skills throughout one’s career in leadership requires a proactive approach to meet the needs of the team and the individuals who will make the team a success.
